New Centaur Groupset: Affordable Performance from Campagnolo
Alongside their introduction of hydraulic disc brakes for their 11-speed road line up, Campagnolo has also released a new mechanical rim brake gruppo called Centaur. The Centaur groupset offers high performance at a more affordable price point, targeting the entry-level road bike market. While it is not designed for gravel riding, the Centaur groupset brings the top-level performance of Campagnolo’s higher-end groups to a wider range of cyclists.
Key Technology Updates
One notable technology update in the Centaur groupset is the new disc brake cranksets, which use a steel version of Campagnolo’s Ultra-Torque axle interface. This allows for a cheaper way to build alloy cranks, replacing the previous Power-Torque axle used in the Potenza groupset. The Centaur groupset also offers a variety of bottom bracket options and uses the same 4-arm crankset design as the higher-end groups.
Ergonomics and Tech
The Centaur groupset shares many of the same ergonomics and technology as Campagnolo’s more expensive groups, with the main difference being slightly heavier aluminum parts. The groupset features an all new Ergopower powershift mechanism in the levers, offering user-friendly function and eliminating the chance for accidental mis-shifts. The front derailleur uses a long throw arm for easy upshifts, while the rear derailleur is designed to work with up to a 32T cassette. The groupset also includes new hoods made of silicone rubber for added comfort.
Affordable Cassettes and Chain
The Centaur groupset offers three new affordable cassettes in 11-29, 11-32, and 12-32 options. These cassettes have a similar construction to the Potenza offerings, with one triple set of cogs on a spider and 8 single cogs, all made of steel. The groupset also includes a new C11 chain designed for use with Potenza and Centaur.
The Centaur groupset features lightweight dual pivot brakes that are 50g lighter than comparable brakes. These brakes offer clearance for up to a 28mm tire.
Affordable and Stylish
With a claimed weight of 2484g, the Centaur groupset is priced competitively with Shimano 105 and offers a classic Italian style. Campagnolo aims to deliver a better performing groupset for the entry-level road riding market, challenging their Japanese competition. The Centaur groupset is part of Campagnolo’s efforts to expand their top-level road racing performance at a more accessible price point.
